For romantic-suspense junkies and fans of Nora Roberts and Karen Robards, bestselling author Kathy Clark kicks off her Austin Heroes series with a pulse-pounding tale of two wounded souls tempted by a dangerous proposition new love.

DEA agent Nick Archer puts his life on the line every day. A former Marine, he fears nothing . . . except commitment. Nick has no trouble finding women eager to warm his bed, and no problem sending them on their way the morning after. Relationships don’t mix with risky careers, a fact Nick learned the hard way after his marriage fell apart. He’d go it alone if it weren’t for his new K-9 partner—and the stunning trainer who makes Nick sit up and take notice.

Just like her service dogs, Jamie Chambers knows how to sniff out trouble. From the moment Nick swaggers into her kennel, she knows he’s heartbreak waiting to happen, and he wastes no time getting under her skin. Hell, he doesn’t even like dogs. As a cop’s widow, Jamie has felt the sting of loss in the line of duty, yet she recognizes something of her own pain in Nick’s smoldering gaze. Jamie knows there are no guarantees in life. But a moment of pleasure, however fleeting, holds the promise of forever—and for that, Jamie’s willing to take the plunge.

After Love An Austin Heroes Novel edition by Kathy Clark Romance eBooks

Good one, spinning off the Archer Brothers from the Denver Heroes series. Nick is the DEA Agent that Sara and Chris met (Deep Night). He is back home in Austin trying to find a dealer selling "loosie-goosies" that are laced with K2, poison and many other substances that are killing college students.

Nick needs a partner and instead of a person..... he gets Harley, a German shepherd who had been difficult to place. Jamie Chambers runs the Woof Gang training school, and Nick is instantly taken by her. She is a young widow who will never love again after her dead husband. Nick had a bad experience with marriage and never wants to be that vulnerable again. She suggests a "friends with benefits" arrangement and he goes along. He finds that he wants more and eventually, Jamie kicks him to the curb.

There's more to the romance and more to the cop story, too. What will endear you is what goes wrong for Nick in this story. He doesn't come off as a hero for most of the story; he comes off as snakebit. He redeems himself, though. Good one with an HEA.

After Love An Austin Heroes Novel edition by Kathy Clark Romance eBooks Reviews

Love this series - - It is okay to read out of order and still enjoy. I just finished this first one and have already read the next two!! Thanks Kathy Clark for filling my day.
Really enjoyed the book. Looking forward to the next one in the series!
It's a great dog story. The crime was solved a little too easily and quickly. The woman was too perfect, not at all encouraging to the average woman. It was great to learn more about police and service dogs.
Good story. Liked the hero more than Jamie— she’s so hung up on not loving another cop because her late husband was killed in the line of duty that she treats Nick poorly. The HEA was sweet but it felt a bit too sweetsy and quickly tied up in a bow.
After Love is the first book in Kathy Clark’s new series, Austin Heroes. We met the hero in Deep Night, the last of her Denver Heroes series. I wasn’t quite sure what to think of him then and, unfortunately, this book didn’t really help. I like the “tortured hero/maverick” concept, within limits, but Nick seemed to push those boundaries. Based on his preference for unorthodox investigation techniques, I was surprised he hadn’t been fired from his position – or riding a desk in the middle of nowhere. While the plot idea of giving Nick a K9 partner made sense initially, the process was way too fast. An agent, not trained to working with dogs, does not just go to the kennel and, after only a couple of sessions, takes the dog home with him as a “trained” partner. So that whole plot line didn’t feel authentic for me. The romance between Jamie and Nick never really felt genuine. Grammy and Harley, the dog, stole the book and were the main reasons I finished it. Clark’s “Denver Heroes” series had an edginess to it that I liked. That was missing here. I’ll try the next one in the series; maybe this book was just a one-off.
I really liked this book and have pre-ordered the next 2 books. I presume they are about the other brothers. One reviewer pointed out some flaws in the plot but I think she/he was overthinking it or she knew more about K9 service dogs than I did which is entirely possible. Whatever. For some reason from the Denver series I thought Nick was older. I agreed with the other reviewer about one thing why does Nick still have a job? It doesn't seem that his boss really likes him anyway. Overall I enjoyed the book and the author did a great job describing my favorite part of Texas.
I liked Jamie and loved Nick. Jamie is a veterinarian who is focusing her time and resources on training service dogs. Her dogs help servicemen/women with PTSD and police forces. Nick Archer, who we met in the Denver series, is a DEA agent who is having a streak of bad luck. He has made some recent, notable faux pas that have kept him on the "bad list" of his superiors despite being a very successful agent when it comes to closing cases.

Nick, as part of his quasi-punishment, is assigned a new partner in the form of Harley. Harley is a German Shepard trained by Jamie to sniff out drugs. A good portion of the book is about Nick and Harley as they ferret out the bad guys who are selling a new synthetic drug that's killing college students in Austin. Their interaction made me laugh out loud and warmed my heart. The other part of the book is about the growing relationship between Jamie and Nick. The reason I didn't completely buy into Jamie is because this very smart, gifted and beautiful woman could not make up her mind about Nick to save her soul. It was exhausting trying to guess if she would grab onto Nick with both hands and realize what a good man he was, or if she would live in fear that a bad event from her past would repeat itself. In the end, she came to her senses but not until she put me--and Nick--through the emotional wringer.

Lots of good here. The bedroom scenes are frequent, steamy and well written. Our hero has a sensitive side. Grammy, Gina, Jared, the twins and other supporting characters added to the story and were more than just props to Jamie and Nick. The synthetic drug story was quite interesting. While this wasn't my favorite from this author, I enjoyed it and hope that this becomes a series like Denver was. I'd definitely recommend it as a good read, rather than a great one. And sometimes that's all you need.
