I came across this book as part of an ebook promo on BookBub and I'm so glad I picked it up. I read another review that compared the author to Michael Crichton and I can totally see that. In fact, I'd amend that statement to say this book is where James Rollins meets Clive Cussler and Michael Crichton, all authors whose work I love. Well-written, engaging, and sufficiently fast-paced to keep my attention. With a storyline that pits good against evil, the series promises to follow in the footsteps of the awesome authors and their protagonists aforementioned. I read it in a 24 hour period, which I don't always have time to do - it has all the hallmarks of a grand success, and I very much look forward to reading the author's other books (I've already begun reading "The Depths" which has a different flavor but feels just as engaging already!

The Enigma Strain Harvey Bennett Thrillers Book 1 edition by Nick Thacker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Picture this! The year is 1704 and a Russian exploration expedition of twenty-five men, is headed by Nikolai Alexei, a tenaciously ambitious young man. The party was deep in the wilderness of the northwest territory of Canada and the freezing winter cold was soon approaching. This didn’t really concern Nikolai as he was used to bitter cold and all the hardships brought with it. He was determined to find something, anything that would be worth his time and the expense of this long and tedious journey.
As they were setting up camp for the night, Nikolai explored the immediate area and soon discovered a cave, going deep into the mountainside. Upon entering the cavern, he found a series of bones, perfectly laid out in neat rows. The bones were old and could have very well been here for hundreds of years. Scattered among the skeletons were large, covered baskets. With difficulty he removed the lid of the first basket and, after waving away the dust that suddenly erupted around him, he gleaned the contents. The basket was filled with strange silver coins with the portrait of a diabolical looking man on either side. Upon further inspection, more, but not all of the baskets were similarly filled. Excited, he called for his men and they proceeded to collect the coins and put them into leather bags.
By dawn the next day, all were dead.

This is the prelude to a mystery that lay dormant for centuries. The story itself is an enigma as a multitude of various characters are paraded before the readers eyes but don’t stay long enough to either add or subtract from the story as a whole, as almost all of them were soon dead. Fortunately, for the story, a duo of characters served as mainstays and manages to stay one step ahead of ultimate demise. Park Ranger Harvey “Ben” Bennett, Dr, Juliette Alexandra Richardson, of the CDC, with the help of Dr. Malcolm Fischer, a university professor. They ban together to discover the secret of the white dust known as the Enigma Strain, who is trying to foil their efforts and who sees it as a weapon of mass destruction and plan to use it as such against the United States. A budding romance simmers in the background, making all the points for success complete. Their arch-rival and nemesis, the stygian Francis Valere, is someone you will just love to hate.

The Enigma Strain is the first book in the (planned) Harvey Bennett Thriller series. If you like James Patterson’s work this may something for you. The chapters are relative short and the story flows from the pages effortlessly. This is a fast-paced techno-thriller that is sure to sate the appetite of any reader. I recommend it highly to all.
I am not going to rehash the story line of this book - several people have already beat me to the punch. I enjoyed this book for several reasons. The description of the surrounding environments were "spot on" - not just the outside world (trees, streams, etc.), but the offices and labs. Main characters were fully developed - you got to know them inside and out - why they thought and did everything in the book. This is a seriously, in depth story - circles within circles. Everyone had motives - the one they presented to the world and the one they kept close to their chest. Don't assume who is the "good" person, and who is the "bad" person - you will be surprised at the end. (I was)
Wow! Three hundred years ago, a Russian survey team--strong, methodical, effective, and focused—found a treasure hidden in a cave in the Northwest Territory of the New World. The coins were heavy enough in total to warrant going home rather than carrying them around on further explorations. That was the last decision they made.
Ben has loved his life as a park ranger in Yellowstone, but the serenity and peace of the job vanished when a small bomb detonates and suddenly a nasty new disease starts spreading like wildfire, killing most of its victims in hours. His loss of a partner and his proximity to the bomb brings him to the attention of a CDC person who remains determined to get answers from him. Their partnership proves life-saving multiple times, and fruitful. Their thinking is spurred by their sparring as well as considering multiple views of the problem. They prove to be the key to solving the plague and preventing a national disaster.
Nick Thacker is a meticulous author who leads the reader through complex activities and thought processes to tell the story. And what a story!
Action thriller - enjoyable, a quiet protagonist with a history... nice start
.I have.been a historical thriller reader for ages - I like some facts worked into the writing, and a follow up by the author as to what adheres to truth and what is fantastical. This novel has some real elements of Yellowstone National Park, and vehicles, but the rest, not much past a Hollywood plausibility.
I think what troubled me most is that another novel, titled "6th Extinction", by James Rollins came out several months prior to this novel. Enigma Strain has a good many aspects of the setting and initial plot; it is the same, only different.
I read some and used audio for some due to health problems. The audio is inaccurate, but still enjoyable. It is worth the reduced price. What I believe needs to happen is there needs to be beta readers so that there are not pointless character flaws, secrets that have no bearing on the plot, and other side stories that lead nowhere. I want to read the rest of the series to see the improvement as more novels are written and more feedback is given.
